Frequently Asked Questions
There are many questions we frequently ask or are asked when we are out and about in public or by family and friends. This page attempts to list some of those questions together with the official Red Hat Society answers.
Q. Are all events only held in Long Beach?
A. No not at all, we have events in Long Beach or any surrounding city. Sometimes we take trips by train or bus to other areas as
a group or join other groups events that could be held in another state or farther away.
Q. Where can I find a red hat?
A. Antiques/collectibles stores, thrift stores and garage sales, online (eBay), and the mall.
Q. Do I have to wear red and purple?
A. Yes to all our public events unless otherwise noted. Red hats are worn or a red bow/clip. [pink hat/lavender clothing for under 50 yr
old] See our "Regalia" for definitions of how to dress for each event/hoot.
Q. Do I have to be a Red Hat member to join SB?
A. Yes it is a requirement to be an official RHS member. Dues is $20 a year to join.
Q. Do we have to go to tea or can we have a different sort of event?
A. Tea parties are fun but we have a wide variety of activities and you can plan any activity you wish. Hosting events
is always welcomed.
Q. How many members make up a chapter?
A. There are no rules, only guidelines. Our chapter has 21 members at present. If our chapter gets too large or becomes
unmanageable, we may encourage the overflow to start another group.
Q. How does SB set up their events?
A. Each member takes her turn to plan an event [at our planning meeting in January all members choose their month] makes the
reservation, advises the QM and hosts the event/hoot. Two members can plan together so one person is not overwhelmed by
all. Always let the Queen Mum or Vice Queen know for the calendar.
Q. I'm not fifty yet, but I like to play dress-up too. How can I be involved?
A. Junior members aka "Pink Ladies" wear pink hats and lavender clothing, exchanging them for the red and purple only after
having “The Big” birthday.
Q: Does SB celebrate member's birthdays?
A: SB sends out birthday cards to all members, [our Sunshine Gal does this task] a birthday congrats is posted on our website
page. A special birthday party and gift and cake is given to member's who celebrate a birthday ending in "0"
Q: Are the restaurants we go to for luncheons expensive?
A: We go to both inexpensive and expensive [depending on the occasion.]
For our Anniversary Luncheon we usually go to a “nice” place.
Q: How often does the SB have events/hoots?
A: Every month we have at least one event/hoot and we also enjoy joining events/ hoots of other local groups.
Q: Do I have to be a member of SB to join in with any of your chapter’s events?
A: No. Any Red Hat Society member is welcome to join any of our outings and all guests who are interested in joining are
welcomed to become members, if you have a visiting relative or friend they are always welcome to come to an event/hoot.
Q: What in the heck is the "Turkey Bowling" event?
A: It is one of our annual events held at the QM house and is a fun party. There are always crazy contests, prizes, and lots of
fun to be had. Pot-luck; usually the cost is low; this event is planned in August.
Q: What is the "Flutter Fund"?
A: The "Flutter Fund" is a box kept by the VQ that is brought to all our events/hoots and placed in the middle of our tables for
you to donate any amount of $$$ or change to help support our group's expenses. Our quarterly reports of expenses and
balances are available on the "Flutter Fund & Birthday Fund" page on our website. It is used for basic SB flyers, photos,
birthday & other cards sent to members & postage,website costs, prizes, party costs, and other group expenses.
Q: What are the benefits of being a SB and having a Red Hat membership?
A. Being part of a fun and friendly chapter in the Red Hat Society! Making new friends, enjoying local and distant outings with
other Red hat sisters, official name badge and pin, learning about new places and fun outings. Getting a wonderful
"new member's" package from the Red Hat Society, joining an organization that is world wide, having the opportunity to
network with other Red Hat sisters.
Q: Does SB have any special club apparel?
A: Yes. We have an official club hats, SB pins, t-shirts, tote bags, Pin Collar/Sashes, and name badges.
Q: Does SB have an official song?
A: Yes, it is posted on our website "Songs & Poems" page. It is sang to the tune of "You are my Sunshine" written by QM. We also
have an official, "SB Queen's Cheer" & an official, "SB Birthday" song, and an official, "SB Toast"
Q: Does your chapter play any games?
A: Yes, we have annual "Game Time" days on the 2nd week of the month, we play different games at each event
Q: How often do we play games?
A: We play on the 2nd Wednesday & Sat every 3 months. [4x a year]
Q: Is there a fee to play games?
A: Yes. $8.00 which helps pay for prizes and support our group!

Q: Does SB own and have a logo?
A: Yes, it was designed by our member Janet Balstad in 2011
Q: When did SB official monthly gatherings begin?
A: On February , 2011 at a luncheon at Marie Calendar's in Seal Beach
Q: What are "J4UD"?
A: It stands for "Just for You Day" a monthly lunch that is at any fast food, non-waitress, low cost restaurant. A quick friendly lunch held casually
for friendship gathering. It is between the hours of 11:30am-1:30pm
Q. How do we choose officers?
A. Officers are not elected. They are appointed by the queen or volunteer to any office they choose. Just let the Queen Mum
know what office you might want to hold.

Q: How can I submit pictures for inclusion in the picture galleries or albums?
A: If you have pictures you would like to submit to our website please contact the RED-EDITOR for submission details so proper arrangements can be made. PLEASE DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY EMAIL PICTURES YOU WANT TO SUBMIT!
The SB chapter has a Group Room at York Photo which allows members to upload and share photos all in one place. Photos can be viewed in slideshow format or individually. The York website and our Group Room are easy to use. People can upload photos from their own computer, at their convenience. They can view albums added to the Group Room by other people. Best of all, the York site allows members to ORDER PRINTS and PHOTO GIFTS online. Login at York Photo is required in order to access SB Group Room. If you do not have a York account it is easy to sign up for one.

Q: Where are most of SB photos stord?
A: At present SB photos are stored in QM Google+ albums. This is an easy access site and lets you store and unlimited number of photos. Snapfish is
another excellent photo ordering site and you can upload photos into Snapfish and then order them to be picked up at your local Walgreens or
WalMart stores.
